The Challenge
The Holtzbrinck Publishing Group is one of Germany´s largest media empires. The group is active worldwide with its business divisions – Macmilan Science and Education, Macmillan Publishers and Holtzbrink Digital Information and Services. The dynamics of the markets in which the group is active and the rapid changes mean that up to minute information about innovation and acquisitions in relevant business areas is critically important to the group.
The brief called for the development of a bespoke business intelligence system to support the Business Insights (BI) department which is responsible for analysing market developments. The group´s collective knowledge from its worldwide operations was to made accessible from any internet-capable deivce using an intricate system encompassing the linking and classification of current market developments, internal analytic structures, metrics and other data sources.
The Solution
The requirements for the Business Insights solution were discussed and defined in an extensive preliminary report produced in conjunction with the responsible stakeholders. The focus of this process was on linking information in order to allow the analysts to classify and assign up to the minute news and market developments.
The system architecture was defined as part of the UX/Design project and presented in a mock-up based on User-Flows and Wireframes. A well-defined and transparent representation of the functionalities and capabilites of the Business Insights system was created at the end of this phase of the project.
The Drupal Content Management System was selected due to the very specific system requirements and the high degree of technical innovation needed to achieve the required goals. Existing content from systems used by the Business Insights department was transferred using an automated migration process ( ETL ).
The Result
The Holtzbrinck Groups new Business Intelligence System provides desktop and mobile access to information regarding current market developments. The use of intelligent filter and search functionalities allows topics or business areas to be refined and sorted. Push-functionality allows users to be informed when new data becomes available. Functions such as the so-called „Watchlists“ facilitate the monitoring of entire market segments, a function which has proven to be particularly useful.
