Open Source Extension
In the context of mapping the project with TYPO3, several external interfaces had to be connected to other library systems. In particular the information systems DBIS (database information system) and EZB (electronic magazine library) of the University of Regensburg were connected. Due to the enormous demand within the library association the decision was made to develop an open TYPO3 extension. It can be downloaded for free in the TER (TYPO3 extension repository):

Challenge
The state and university library Hamburg named after Carl von Ossietzky (also known as „Stabi“, Staatsbibliothek) is Hamburg's largest scientific general library, and simultaneously it is the central library of the University of Hamburg and other universities of the town. The upcoming relaunch should meet the requirements of evergrowing medium internet and lead the numerous visitors to the desired information quickly, conveniently and securely. Additionally, within a short time the editorial team of the library should be enabled to keep the complete web presence current with the editing system TYPO3.
Solution
To this one offer the online team of the library a maximum flexibility, the base system TYPO3 was extended by numerous auxiliary modules and structure elements. All contents and their visualization can be managed by the editors of the library on a standalone basis, without external help. In addition, most different systems were integrated into the complete appearance by use of individual interfaces. A special highlight in technical regards was the imbedding of online databases and magazines from the supply of the University of Regensburg. This was the first time that such a project had become a success in Germany. The online editorial staff of the library was introduced to the new system in several one-day seminars, and they received close support by Avonis in the starting phase.
The Result
The relaunch is a scuccess. On only just 3.000 pages, one million visitors per annum can find information around the library with only few clicks. Now they can even search for books, magazines, databases and other contents directly. The feedback of the users was consistently positive and the close and trusting cooperation was praised on part of the library management. Dedication, competence and a joint iterative approach have led to an up-to-date online appearance for Hamburg's largest scientific general library at which will bring lots of joy to both the visitors and the editors in the future.
